Duke of Edinburgh

What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?

The Duke of Edinburgh Award is recognised worldwide by colleges, universities and employers. This qualification sets the applicants above others showing they have determination; commitment; exceptional teamwork skills and the ability to excel in everything they participate in.

What is involved in the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award?

This award is made up of four sections; physical recreation, skill, volunteering and expedition. The students have to take part in each of the first three sections for one hour a week for 3 months. They then further extend their favourite section for another 3 months, logging what they have done on the online system.

What does each section include?

Physical
Student’s can choose to participate in a range of physical recreation activities. These include individual and team sports, marital arts, dance, water sports and fitness to name a few.

Skill
Students are encouraged to take up this opportunity to learn a new skill. Some examples of this include; care of animals, creative arts, music, life skills and performing arts.

Volunteering
This section gives students the opportunity to gain work experience within the community. There are a wide range of choices that can be included in this section. For example; coaching, community action, helping a charity or organisation, helping people or working with animals.

Expedition
This consists of classroom-based training for one hour a week for approximately 12 weeks. This training includes, first aid, map reading, camp craft, tent building, cooking and route planning. Students then participate in a day walk or practice expedition where they will put some of their skills in to practice as a team. Finally, the students take part in a Qualifying Expedition where they complete a two-day expedition which they have planned in their teams. They are assessed on their navigating skills, setting up camp, teamwork and looking after the environment. The students are remotely supervised by trained and dedicated staff.
